Veeam B&R with Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI)

Post by dryanwilliams »

Hi,

We currently use Veeam B&R for the majority of our on-prem workloads in Hyper-V and ESXi. We have recently started moving workloads into Oracle Cloud Infrastructure.

We are looking for a backup solution that will handle our on-prem stuff as well as stuff in OCI and Azure.

I would LOVE to keep Veeam B&R but I'm not finding a whole lot about integration with OCI.

Does anyone use Veeam to protect OCI VMs and if so, how?

Will Veeam have any native integration with OCI in the near future?

There is nothing planned for the near future.
Like other solutions there is the option to leverage our agents with it. Backup & Replication has very simple Agent Management options and you can copy the data arround. Even Instant Restore the workload on your VMware and Hyper-V (need Backup & Replication v11) environments.

Maybe this one fits better:

Oracle Cloud VMware Solution (OCVS)

We fully support this environment with all of our Software and Features.

Hi Ryan,

Welcome to our Community Forums! You may also take a look at Veeam Backup for Azure if you run some of your workloads in Microsoft Azure.

Thanks!

Hi Ryan,

As Andreas mentioned we have support for OCVS. But you could leverage our agents to protect instances running in OCI. Our agents would run on the instances themselves and you could have app integration. You could use persistent volumes, nfs and OCS object storage for cloud tier.

Do you have any details about the size of your environment?

Any changes after year and something?

We are using Oracle Cloud too, and may be it is good idea to have some backups of it stored outside of that cloud. But my coworker responsible for it is refusing to install agents.

No, v11 and upcoming v12 of our software will not have any direct OCI backup support, however you can use managed agent approach which works near seamlessly.

if you are going to restore a backup up vm in OCI and restore it on OCI, can it create the vm, or we have to manually create a new VM then restore the disks to it?

also does it support object storage as primary backup not as secondary tiering?

Bare Metal Restore or Rollout of VMs + Agent rollout + data restore is needed to bring back the workload. (There is no direct backup of image level to OCI Cloud VMs).

Direct Backup to Object Storage is a v12 feature. V12 release will happen later this year.

Just to follow up here.
My comment was related to direct backup to object storage (coming with v12) and not support for OCI.

Oracle Cloud Object Storage in not compatible with us currently as Oracle has a incomplete S3 implementation: object-storage-f52/unoffizial-compatibi ... 56956.html
There is no timeline available currently from Oracle on when they would close this gap.

Oracle OCI VM backup is a feature request. Currently we can not comment about if and when this will be implemented. You can use the managed agents for backing up these servers.

Oracle Cloud VMware Solution (OCVS) is fully supported virtualization backup. See https://www.veeam.com/kb4007

Hi,

We recently purchsed Veeam backup for our environment and in the process of deploying it. As of now our most of the workloads are in the AWS and Hyper-V infra. but eventually we are moving most of the workloads into Oracle cloud (OCI). As of now Veeam supports only AWS,Azure and google providers. There is no direct plugin for OCI. Are their any plans release OCI plugin in near future ? We require a direct plugin support for OCI.

Hello and Welcome to Veeam R&D Forums!

There are no changes in our road map. As per the suggestion above, you may use Veeam Agents in the managed mode.

Thanks!

OCI backup:
Image Level (including optional Oracle DB processing) => Veeam Managed Agents
You can as well rollout with v12 our RMAN Plug-in and handle Oracle DB backups that way.

Backup Target:
Oracle Cloud Object Storage is now supported as Oracle implemented needed changes to heal compatibility with the AWS S3 standard.

Hi team, I can see that Oracle Cloud OCI S3 is supported as Object ready, do you know if it also supports S3 Objectlock now or in the near future for us to use immutability?

Yes, but the timeline is unknown. It is more of a question for Oracle then and customers should reach out to their Oracle Sales representatives to raise awareness and demand to accelerate timelines.
