Veeam Backup on rotated drives with only full backups

Post by d33psun »

Hello all,

We have been using Veeam Backup & Replication for some time.
We would now like to use "Backup Copy" to exclusively back up full backups to external USB hard drives.
The standard backups all work perfectly.

We have tried the following setting:
Backup Repositories:
- One repository with the setting "This repository is backend by rotated hard drives".
The repository is recognised and the backup copy jobs are saved to it.

Backup Copy job:
- Periodic copy
- Copy every 1 day
- Restore points to keep 2

What must be set so that only a full backup is copied?
The hard disks rotate on a weekly basis.
A history is not required. Only the full backups should be available.

The registry key: ForceDeleteBackupFiles is set to 3
Is 5 better?

Thank you and greetings from Germany

Hello and Welcome to our Community Forums!

You cannot specify the type of backup that you want to process by backup copy, the purpose of backup copy is to transfer the actual state of VM in backup to the secondary storage but not just to copy a backup file. This approach allows you to stay within 3-2-1 rule. Although, I'm wondering to know why do you want to process only fulls? Basically, you can reduce the number of restore points in backup copy job settings to save some free space.

It's difficult to say what is better as a value for ForceDeleteBackupFiles because it depends on your specific needs. I'd suggest to refer to this KB article to get a detailed description of each value.

Thanks!
