Veeam Backup & Replication Community Edition / Backup SQL-Server?

Post by doc_jochim »

Hi there,

is the community edition able to save and restore a single Microsoft SQL Database including its data on a Win2016Server-essentials system?

I cannot find any information at veeam's website.

Here I can find that B&R is able to handle Microsoft SQL

and further down:

community edition has the same features as B&R-standard-edition.

But what is standard-edition?

Website's information is not helpful and a support chat couldn't give me suitful information too.

Hope, you can help me

Hello Doc Jochim

Welcome to the forum.
The community edition of Veeam Backup & Replication allows you protect the entire Microsoft SQL server. Either as a virtual machine with a VM backup job or physical machine with our Veeam Agent. Your Microsoft SQL Database will be protected together with the entire server. And you can use this Veeam Backup & Replication to restore only this database back to the original SQL server or a new SQL server.

But to just backup a single MSSQL database, you will need our MSSQL plugin. This plugin is not available in the community edition.

Please see our feature comparison guide for more information what's possible in the community edition and what is not:

I find:

Veeam Explorer for Microsoft SQL Server:
Restore individual SQL databases with ease, without needing an extensive SQL background or having to search for database and transaction-log files.

What does 'partially supported' mean?

You can backup and restore the entire SQL database with all it's data.
But a more granular level restore (restore a single table, view, stored procedure, ...) is not available with the Community Edition.

Just for a better understanding...:

My Windows-Server is running 3 databases
Server\db1$
Server\db2$
Server\db3$

Backup & Replication community edition only supports an entire backup of all databases.
Yes / No

A single backup of only one of these databases is not possible
Yes / No

If one of these databases crashed and has to be recovered, it is possible to recover only one of these databases while leaving the others untouched.
Yes / No
