Veeam backup repository on NetApp FlexGroup

Post by EMPB »

Hi,

we store some of the backup data on NetApp on a FlexGroup.
We run into the issue that some jobs when they create new files (full backup) that they are not put on a FlexGroup constituent with most available disk space.
That leads for the constituent to run out of disk space and the backup job fails with not enough storage message. And recovery from that can take additional steps at it at times corrupts meta data.

Is there anyone using FlexGroup to store Veeam backup data and run into the same issue and what they did?

We are forced to rearrange huge amount of data so we can have bigger constituents, but then still need keep monitoring the space usage.

Sounds like you should reconsider your Backup Mode settings. For instance, if you selected Reverse Incremental then it is no longer necessary to create synthetic fulls as you'll always have a full backup at the front of your backup chain. With that configuration the storage usage is much more consistent and less spikey, you'd be able to control it better if you have space issues.

That just slowly fills up the same constituent, instead of faster and wouldn't fix the underlying issue.

Not sure this is related to Veeam B&R, since it doesn't take part in constituent selection, it is done by ONTAP. I suggest asking NetApp for assistance here.
