Veeam Backup SQL Database recommendations
Does Veeam have any recommendation on the SQL server config for its own database? We have both our vCenter and Veeam databases on a SQL Always On virtual cluster. We've recently experienced some issues where when the backup job is backing our SQL server up, the snapshot gets hung and requires disk consolidation, sometimes resulting in very high latency to the storage. Our DBA's stated the transaction log was growing quite rapidly compared to the database size and they asked if Veeam recommended weather having the database in Full vs Simple mode mattered. I haven't found much on the topic so far.

Hi Shawn,
Our default setting as well as the recommendation is to keep Veeam database in the Simple mode unless you will need to do point-in-time recovery, but I highly doubt that you will ever need to do that for Veeam B&R database.
Thanks!

Did it hang during snapshot commit operation or your backup job just stalled?mcclans wrote: the snapshot gets hung and requires disk consolidation, sometimes resulting in very high latency to the storage

Re: Veeam Backup SQL Database recommendations
Hi Vitaliy,
Thanks for the quick reply. Yes, the SQL vm tends to hang on the snaphshot commit / removal. It's currently hung at 99%. Our vCenter DB was in the SQL Always On cluster so that's where they put our Veeam DB as well. We'll need to move the Veeam DB to another instance as the Always On requires the DB be in Full mode.

Issues on snapshot removal are expected for highly-transactional VMs. Are you able to reproduce the same behavior by snapshotting the VM manually and letting it run from snapshot for some time (comparable to the time of backup)?

We're moving the database to an instance in simple mode and will re-test.
