veeam essentials - does it cover malware detection?

Post by Patchwork7824 »

Hello everyone,
since our "old" backup software stopped working last week I did install veeam community edition on an old PC, attached to a NAS so we at least have a backup from our server (7 virtual machines, about 2 TB of data).

I am completely blown away by veeam comparing to our current backup software so we are thinking about switching everything to veeam.

I did talk with my executive, and mentioned there is an essential edition available.
What are the advantages of the essential version (for max 10 nodes) compared to the community edition?

I do know that essentials comes with support and some monitoring functions which are missing with the community edition.
What about the "malware detection" - is it included in the essential edition?

Yes, it offers access to all VBR features including multiple different malware detection methods:
- Inline detection of encryption by ransomware
- Suspicious file system activity analysis
- Indicators of Compromise (IoC) detection
- YARA scans (for when you know what you are looking for)
- Veeam Threat Hunter (signature-based scans for when you don't know)

Veeam Essentials has the same capabilities as VDP Advanced edition, just discounted for SMB and therefore limited to 50 licenses max.

So look for VDP editions comparison at veeam.com and refer to Advanced edition for capabilities you will get with Veeam Essentials.

Thank you very much for your answer!
The essentials does provide a lot of value from my point of view. I will prepare my arguements why we should use essentials instead of community edition.
