Veeam explorers (exchange, sharepoint) are really slow

Post by tntteam »

Hi,

We are saving our exchange and sharepoint testing environments using Veeam and it works quite well.

The sharepoint explorer or exchange explorer are really slow to mount and show items and I was wondering what could I check to solve this ?

To give you an idea, the backup of our sql sharepoint server is 40+110+30Gb disks, and takes approximatively 1 hour to mount in sharepoint explorer.

Exchange explorer is also quite slow to mount.

We are working with vmware vsphere 5.5, the Veeam management console is on a VM, the backups are on a dedicated SAN which show good speed for sequential reading/writing of big files such as Veeam Backups.
But When I use explorers, I don't see anywhere a lack of performance (FC links, ethernet links, memory, cpu, ...) neither on backup proxy nor management station.

Thanks for any hints :)

Mounting an application database involves lots of random I/O, so there is no way its performance can be compared to sequential read. Have you tried to restore from backup on local backup repository on backup server to compare the speed?

That's a very small server, so it should mount very quickly. I would definitely start from troubleshooting the backup storage.

1 hour seems excessively long for such a small VM.
I just checked in my environment:
Exchange-server VM with 160+1500+512+1024+512+512 GB storage
backup storage is somewhat slow on random read and was doing a reverse incremental at the time
Veeam Explorer for Exchange was ready to use after ~10 minutes.
Without a reverse incremental backup job running in the background this goes down to ~4 minutes.

Thanks for your answers. I'll make some tests with numbers and report them back here.

Quick diagram :

Image

Veeam-mgmt is 2vcpu 8GB RAM, I'm using sharepoint explorer from here.
Veeam-proxy is physical 1 CPU e5-2620 (12 threads) 16GB RAM linked to production and backup storage with 8Gb FC links.

The server I'm trying to mount is the SQL server of sharepoint infrastructure, which has 40(os)+110(SQL data files,91 GB used, 113 different databases in total)+30(sql binaries) Gb disks

The backup chain (tests) is one full (30/07) 235GB + one incremental (27/08) 59GB. The size are big because this test backup contains other sharepoints servers like iis, app server, etc.

I'm trying to mount the latest backup using sharepoint explorer.

Start time 11h36
End time 12h05

Network bandwidth (consumed while mounting backup) between proxy and mgmt veeam approx 70Mbps (not MBps)

Crystaldisk benchmark on veeam proxy benchmarking the FC disk where sharepoint is saved by veeam :

Image

Windows winsat :

Windows winsat read random 512Kb blocks (I think it is correct to assume veeam uses 512k blocks because I selected local target + compression) :

So what do you think ? It's the backup storage that is too slow for random reads ?

Looks pretty good to me - recommend you open a support case for further troubleshooting. Thanks!

Hi there,

The support conclusion is "It's ok because you have a lot of databases to mount".

So my sharepoint server has 113 databases, and it's a normal behavior to have 10-30sec delay between each mount request.
There is no way to // this process, and increase veeam management server's resources won't help a lot.

Well, too bad :( I'm a bit disappointed because Veeam is excellent in many ways but I'll have to deal with it.

Can't wait to need to restore an exchange item with its hundreds of databases.

So basically you have over a hundred of 1GB databases?
What is the reason for such a design, if I may ask?

Ask Microsoft why they create 1 db per website I'd say :)

I'm no expert on our sharepoint (and not the one who manages it), I'm just setting up the backup system.

But I'm more worried about our exchange system, as we have a waaaaaay lot of databases to handle 50k students + 5k .. coworkers ? (sorry for my english).

What I'm a bit sad about is the process of mounting the database is not breaking any hardware limit (cpu, memory, network, disk) - or I don't see which one neither support do - so I don't know why it can't be faster. It's like "Hey let's take a 10seconds coffee between each database mount" :p

Saeed, could you please clarify what option is disabled specifically? Are you trying to mount the content database in Veeam Explorer for SharePoint or performing restore?

What kind of list are you trying to restore?

Available commands depend on the specific list/item you're restoring. For example, you can save an item to disk if it is a document or a folder, you can save all the documents of a document library, or you can export the list with all its items (using the Export List command - isn't that what you're looking for?).

You can either restore the list or items to production using the Restore List/Restore Items commands or use Export List to save the list on disk with all its items. The commands you've highlighted are available for Document Library lists only.

[MERGED] Veeam Explorer for Exchange is extremely slow

Post by desmond.lee »

Hi all. We use Veeam with DD boost for backup. We tried to restore email from Veeam Explorer with very poor performance (Around 4 - 6 hrs for mounting 1TB image from DD and additional 4 to 6 hrs for 500MB mailbox export). We opened a case with Veeam but no errors were found. Anyone encounter this situation before? Please help. :( :(

Hi,
As was mentioned above, operations with random read are always slower than the ones with sequential. I would try to restore from backup to compare speed.
Thanks!
