Veeam/san backup/3PAR/Datadomain

Post by techno-par »

Hi

We are looking at redesigning Veeam backup for our vmware environment.
We have fc san with 3PAR storage. At the moment we are using virtual
servers for veeam and proxy servers. Using Veeam for managing snapshots
and directing backup of the snapshots to Datadomain. (cifs share)

We plan to use physical Veeam/proxy servers so we can access the
data through the san. Is it possible to have backup data going to
a different 3PAR lun (NLSAS lun) other than the production lun (SAS).
Older generations of backup we would like to have on Datadomain.

But doing it this way we would have always the first generation of
Veeam on our primary storage and hopefully reduce the backup
window and get a faster restore.

And in what way would Datadomain boost help out in this scenario?

Geir, you can point your regular backup jobs to another 3PAR LUN to keep a few restore points for fast operational restores and utilize backup copy jobs to send backups to DataDomain for longer retention (probably, with GFS rotation enabled).

DDBoost really makes DataDomain shine as a the secondary backup target in terms of performance.

To Foggy's point you should be able to get good "Instant Recovery" performance off of a CIFS share backed by a 3PAR LUN. Another cool Veeam feature is the "Explorer for Storage Snapshot" capability for HP StoreServ-3PAR (and HP StoreVirtual/StoreVirtualVSA; NTAP FAS coming soon). With this feature Veeam will automatically clone and mount a 3PAR "Virtual Copy" snap of a production VMFS volume and enable you to recover VMs, VM files, OS files, Exchange messages and other MS App objects (SQL, AD, SharePoint) from the 3PAR snapshot. With 3PAR you can schedule application-consistent storage-level snapshots every 5 minutes for routine recovery scenarios like deleted files, infected VMs and the like. In a few clicks and a few minutes you can recover a file with a 5 minute Recovery Point Objective from the 3PAR "Virtual Copy" snapshot. This makes for a great multi-tier strategy with low RPO recovery from production storage and long-term backup storage retention from the disk appliance.
