Veeam V12 MS SQL vs PostgreSQL

Post by JeWe »

Hi all,

I'm planning to upgrade our V11 to V12 in the next weeks. As with V12 PostgreSQL is supported, I wonder if it makes sense to switch to PostgreSQL for performance reasons. Or maybe there are other goodies. We run a small environment with about 25 HyperV VMs, tape backup is also in use.

Should we stay with MS SQL or switch to PostgreSQL? Which are the advantages / disadvantages? Any users which can share there experience?

Hi JeWe

For 25 VMs and Tape Backup I don‘t expect any performance issues.
Benefits in PostgreSQL include that it doesn‘t require a license for databases bigger than 10GB.
Benefits for MSSQL, it‘s a proven technology in combination with Veeam Backup & Replication.

Are you doing File to Tape jobs or Backup to Tape Jobs?

Hi JeWe

Thanks. If your File-To-Tape jobs are protecting a lot of files which had required a licensed MSSQL server, you may benefit from a migration to PostgreSQL.
