VeeaMover - SMB/NAS to ReFS question

Post by TonioRoffo »

Asking this question as I can't find the correct answer in the forum.

Can I use VeeaMover to migrate old SMB based NAS backup jobs (with loads of full backups) to ReFS? If I do, will the process try to use fast cloning and will it find identical blocks in my old full backups?

Thank you.

Hi Tonio

Yes, VeeaMover will use FastClone to move those backups to a reFS storage. Identical blocks within the same backup chain will only be transferred once.

Fabian,

This then means that the copy will take way less space on the new ReFS?

Thank you.

Correct. The requirement is, you have regular full backups in your backup chain on the SMB repository.
When you move those backup chains, we use fast clone to move the full backup files to the reFS repository. Incremental backups will keep their original size.
