Re: Virtual appliance mode question
Hello, vStorage API Virtual Appliance mode is the recommended backup mode if you're running Veeam backup server in the virtual machine. You may consider looking through this topic which is very good one to start with if you want to know more about this backup mode: vStorage API in Virtual Appliance mode

Re: Virtual appliance mode question
You can use Virtual Appliance mode with local storage as well. But you need to have Veeam Backup VM located on the same datastore as VMs you are backing up.

Re: Virtual appliance mode question
Can i also conclude that the san mode works well if you have a replication task instead of backup task?
I've seen this because.

Re: Virtual appliance mode question
Yes, that's right. You can use the same vStorage API modes for both, backup and replication jobs.

Re: Virtual appliance mode question
I've got the errors with the backup job on the VM and not on the Replication job on that same VM strange?

Re: Virtual appliance mode question
Sorry, just want to make sure I've got the proper takeaway here, as we just virtualized our Veeam server this morning: it's absolutely best to backup via Virtual Appliance mode when Veeam is running as a VM, correct? I shouldn't bother with the involved process of installing the MS iSCSI initiator and all the rigmarole that goes with authentication between server and SAN...?
Just trying to save myself potentially unnecessary work, here!
Thanks,
John

Re: Virtual appliance mode question
Hi John, I would go with the Virtual Appliance mode. Make sure you have the latest release (4.1.2). Also note some of Virtual Appliance mode limitations listed here. Thanks!

Re: Virtual appliance mode question
Thanks, Anton. Is "HotAdd" just another way of saying "Virtual Appliance Mode"? I ask, because one of my VMs already violates one of the criteria (it's over 1TB in size). I've backed it up successfully using my physical Veeam server on SAN-only mode...

Re: Virtual appliance mode question
Correct. HotAdd is the process of adding backed up VM disks to Veeam Backup server running as a VM.
