VM is not storage snapshot compatible. Why?

Windows 2016 Backup Proxy/Repository with FC zoned to the EMC VNX
I am able to view and create VNX snapshots in Veeam after adding the Storage Infrastructure
Backups do not use storage snapshots, instead reverts to VM snapshots. Logs indicate that the "VM is not storage snapshot compatible".

I have a support case open (02133096) but the response time is slow so I'm seeing if any users have some ideas. One of the questions asked by support is if the VMDK is stored on multiple LUNs. The answer is No. The VM's vmdks I'm testing with is stored in a single LUN.
