VM Notes in Job Notifications

Post by zidtugraz »

Hi all,

We are currently evaluating Veeam Backup & Replication 5.0.2.230 (64 Bit) on a Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 (64 Bit). The environment we are backing up is a VMware vSphere 4.1 (Enterprise Edition) with ESXi 4.1 hosts and one vCenter Server 4.1. The management of our virtual infrastructure is decentralised, i.e., there are several administrators of virtual machines, where every administrator can only see his/her virtual machines.

Since we would like to offer our virtual machine administrators an overview of the backup status in the vSphere client we use the "Notifications" option in backup jobs ("New Backup Job" wizard -> "Backup Destination" step -> "Advanced" button -> "Notifications" tab -> "VM notes" option). Basically, this option works fine, but it also posed a few questions:
  • The option says Set successful backup details to this VM attribute. Hence, only the status of successfully completed backups will be logged in vCenter. Our question: Is there a possibility to send the status of unsuccessful backups jobs as well (if, of course, vCenter can be contacted).
  • It is possible to provide the name of the VM attribute used for logging data in vCenter. (We chose Veeam Backup.) The attribute shows up in the vSphere client, but the status messages are very long and contain information that is not necessary for us. Our question: Is it possible to define which information is logged in vCenter. We are thinking of something similar to the variables used in the general notification settings ("Tools" menu, "Option" item, "E-mail settings" tab, "Subject" option). There are, for instance, the %JobName% and %JobResult% variables. If there were, for instance, variables like %BackupDate%, %BackupTime%, %BackupHost%, %BackupFile%, and probably also some additional variables like %BackupStatus% (successful, failure), %BackupSize% (e.g., file size), %BackupDuration% (time in hh:mm:ss) we could freely define our status visible in the vSphere client.

Thanks in advance,
Josef.

PS: When I click on "Preview" first and, in the preview, on "Submit" an "Error 404" page is displayed and my posting is not submitted. I can reproduce this in Google Chrome 13.0.782.112 and Firefox 6.0 on Mac OS X 10.6.8.

Josef, currently there are no possibilities you are talking about. Actually this feature is not intended to track job events but to have the ability to see when this particular VM was last backed up (what is the date of the last valid backup).

PS Actually even in case of 404 you still succeeded to submit your posts, so I've already deleted 4 dupes. ;)

Probably this feature will be implemented in an upcoming version ;-)

Hi,

Is this feature has been implemented in Veeam Backup & Replication v9.5 ?

There's an ability to specify the name of the attribute, if this is what you mean.
