vSphere 4 vStorage API backup and replication [Paid ESXi 4]

Post by albertwt »

Hi All,

I've got a vSphere Essential 4 license and would like to try the new vStorage backup API, I've installed the Veeam backup and replication software 4.0.80 and the Enterprise Mgr. on the physical backup server, see the following deployment diagram:

Image

I could not select any ESXi01 or 02 local VMFS datastore from the Veeam apart from the local backup server directory, Do i have to redo the whole network deployment ?

I've read somewhere in this forum that by using hotadd (creating Windows Server 2003 VM + VBR 4.08) i need to purchase the Advanced license ? I thought that this is not the case with VCB v1.5 u1

Looking forward for any reply and suggestion.

Cheers.

Hi,

Your Vmware License must have HOT ADD not your Veeam License... I have HOT ADD mode with my enterprise license but some lower starter versions do not have this feature and you will not be able to use it.

Hope That Helps

Hello Albert,

Judging by your setup picture, I see that you're using ESXi versions only, but, unfortunately, ESXi cannot be used as replication/backup target right now, that's why you cannot see it in destination list, but the support of ESXi hosts as targets is already in our future feature list and it has a very high priority. However, we do support it as a source, so you can easily use any storages attached to your Veeam Backup server to store your backups.

As for Hot Add mode, as Trevor has just said correctly, you should have this feature licensed with your VMware license. Here is the link for VMware's licensing overview:

Thank you.

OK, great,

@vsafarov: When will it be released then ?

suppose I'm using ESX 4 (not ESXi) is my current network setup correct to use the vStorage API ?

Thanks for all for the reply.

Albert,

It will be quite soon

You can use vStorage API mode with your current setup surely, but be aware that the setup also depends on what vStorage API mode you want to use, for ex. to use vStorage API SAN mode, you should have direct connection to your SAN from Veeam Backup and Replication server.

Please have a look at the modes descriptions in our User Guide:
http://www.veeam.com/veeam_backup_4_0_user_guide_pg.pdf

Thank you
