WAN or over-the-Internet backups
Hello,
Would like to hear if anyone knows if the following scenario is possible. We are a MSP and IT-supplier with several clients using virtualization servers.
* We have a datacenter and a central Veeam Backup Server with the console and everything running.
* Lets say a client, has 192.x.x.x network behind a firewall and a Hyper-V Core server running with some VMs. In their network we also have got a NAS sharing a folder for possible backups.
? Is it possible to somehow deploy a Veeam agent on the Hyper-V core server, and remotely from our central datacenter backupserver issue backup commands to the clients hyper-V server to perform VM backups to their local NAS?
We would like to manage the backups centrally for many clients withour VPN tunnels to all of them. As many have the same subnets this would cause VPN trouble.
Thanks,
josef

Re: WAN or over-the-Internet backups
From experience, yes this does work. But if you try to run a guest file level restore you do not have an option to pick a proxy to run that data through. With that in mind, the backup on the local site is processed back at the central location, and will definitely be slow (but workable) over the WAN.
If that is something you do not envision doing often, you should be OK.

Josef, this will work provided that you are able to add both Hyper-V server and backup repository server to the Veeam B&R console.

Hello,
Ok, and for that we need "internal" contact, not over internet https communication I guess, theres no WAN solution?

Re: WAN or over-the-Internet backups
As Foggy mentioned, you will have to have a network connection to customer's environment, so that, both hyper-v host and backup repository can be added to your backup server. Thanks.
