Weekly Backup Advice please

Post by royp »

Veeam BnR v 9
We have the usual file and print server which is backed up on a separate weekly job to the daily job.

What is the preferred option.
Incremental with create synthetic full
or
Incremental with create synthetic full and transform previous backup chains into rollbacks
or
Incremental with Active Full.

We have previously had issues with synthetic full when we had the option selected for Transform previous backup chains into rollbacks as they seemed to take an absolute age.

Would love to hear which is the preferred and the reason why and if possible, the likely pitfalls with that option.

Thanks everyone

What device is used as a target repository? If target repository cannot cope with random ("synthetic" activity) I/O well, you'd better use forward incremental with periodic active fulls.

Thanks.

Thanks for quick reply Vladimir.
Just adding some new storage, it will shortly be backing up to a QNAP TS-EC880U.
Both source and target will be on the same subnet. seperate buildings only 100 mtrs apart but connected via fibre link etc.

You can test your new storage with transform option and see whether it allows you to meet your backup window.
