Weekly Backup Copy job for dedupe storage

Post by wasc »

Hi,

We have a requirement which we're struggling to implement with Veeam. Basically we want to have regular Weekly, Monthly and Quarterly snapshots of our data for long term retrieval purposes. The Backup copy job seems perfect for this, combined with Windows 2012 dedupe.

However, we're struggling to successfully implement this. Our Backup copy job has the setting "Keep the following restore points for archival purposes" set, and is currently creating the weekly snaps as expected (filename ending in _W.vmk)

The problem is, our job is 2.4TB in size, and it struggles to do the copy and the merging of restore points within 24 hours. We currently have the job setup to copy every 1 day. Is there a way to schedule it to run only on the required Saturday?
Alternatively what would happen if we told it to run every 7 days and left it on continuous mode - would this correctly create the weekly/monthly archive points but otherwise remain idle?

Essentially, all we want is for it to take an archive point every saturday (which will get deduped and stored for a long time). We don't want it to do anything else. What's the best way to do this?

We do have our backup job set to take an active full every saturday so i'm tempted in a way to just copy the saturday full vmk off by some sort of script, but this isn't ideal because;
a) The copied vmk would not be using the dedup friendly compression algorithm
b) If the job failed, we'd potentially have some vm's not appearing in that restore point. As far as I know the copy job copies the most recent successful instance of a given vm, so would not have this problem.

Any help / suggestions gratefully received.

Setting the copy interval to 7 days is the right way to achieve what you're after. The job will copy latest VMs state on a weekly basis and maintain the specified number of GFS restore points.

Awesome - thanks very much - I'll give that a go.
