I use OpenStorage technology with Backup Exec. No CIFS, NFS or VTL.

Install a Linux Server with Perl and SSH and mount the NFS share. Add the Linux System as a Replository Server.
There is a Guide from EMC that shows the settings on DD side and you can have a look at our User Guide to see how exactly a Linux Repository Server are installed.

I highly reccomend NFS as a proxy. Moving to NFS from CIFS resulted in a 3x speed increase of our backups. As other posters have mentioned, instructions on how exactly to perform this configuration are in the DataDomain portal.

We Connect using NFS due to speed issues with CIFS. If CIFS's ever worked better it would be simplier setup with one less server.

Wayne, I believe I have heard that CIFS performance was improved significantly in the latest firmware versions, to the point where using NFS for performance no longer made sense.

We actually use both CIFS and VTL. And indeed, performance wise CIFS is on par NFS

To those of you that are touting the performance of CIFS over NFS; what version of DDOS are you running?
