Will backup copy merge continue without primary veeam server

Post by mkretzer »

Hello,

our latest backup files are about 50 TB big. The changes which can be quite big are copied by backup copy job to an off-site location.
It works perfectly but with this size you can imagine that 70 % of the day some backup merge is running in the remote location.

The question is: What will happen if the primary site fails (for example by fire) in the middle of a merge on the remote site? Will the remote merge continue even without the Veeam server controlling it?
I know from another forum thread that if a backup merge fails in the middle of a process the files are still usable but only after the next backup run.

I am now very worried because in such a szenario there will never be a "next backup run" if the files are not recoverable (because the primary site with its primary datastores and the primary Veeam has burned down)...

Hello Markus,
The merge should finish on the remote site, however if VBR database is in the same location with VBR server it will not be updated.
Once you recover the VBR server, no backup data will be lost.

Hello,

So we rebuild the primary Veeam, restore from the config backup (which is on the same repo as the copied backups in the remote repo) and then rescan the copy/remote repo?

Then we should be able to restore?
