Windows Cluster i VMware - How to Veeam backup???

Post by rosenstand »

HI all

I'm running into an problem, regarding VMware, Veeam and Windows Cluster

I have to setup two VM in Vmware, and they have to run Windows File Cluster.
To what I have read, and can find out, the way of doing this, is to create two servers, with an secondary SCSI controller, and enable "SCSI Bus Sharing", by setting this to "Virtual".

I have done all of this, and Windows Cluster also works perfect.
Both of the servers can take ownership of the disk, if they need to, and failover also works perfect.

But how do I perform an Veeam backup of this server?

If I just setup an normal VMware backup, I get an error saying: Task failed Error: Cannot process XXXX-XXXX (vm-2110): SCSI controller engaged in bus-sharing is present

If anyone can help me forward on this, it would be great!

Thanks

Regards

This is a VMware Limitation - you can't snapshot a Vm with any controllers in Bus Sharing.

Really not the answer I was hoping for :|

Is it possible for me to make backup of the local drive ( C:\ on the VM), and not the cluster disk, so I will have an backup of Windows?

Snapshot is created for the entire VM. So, it doesn't appear to be an easy way to achieve what you're after.

You can try to use Veeam Endpoint Backup for this task.

I can inform that this hasnt been fixed in ESXi 6U2....
This is a huge dealbreaker when converting from Hyper-V to VMware... Hyper-V supports Veeam snapshot with Shared disks for a Windows File Cluster.... (and doing a fine job performing backup with shared disks in Hyper-V!)

This will definitely have a huge "weight" on choosing our hypervisor for new infrastructure setups... This is not good enough VMware...

Yes, I don't expect it to be changed in the minor updates of vSphere, so I would get back to this question in their next major release.

Well obviously you should just use Hyper-V and not VMWare

Good for you we do support both, so you can use Veeam in any case ;)
