End of Windows XP Support by Veeam?

Post by lp@albersdruck.de »

Hello!

As Gostev said in the weekly forum digest, Veeam would like to end support for Windows XP.

I'd say that support for backing up Windows XP (and restoring) should not be dropped in the next major release.
There are those of us who are caught between a rock and software vendors that are unable to update their software to work on a modern version of Windows. Or better yet, we have to use software that only works with Windows XP and whose vendor has gone the way of the dodo.

Hi Lars, thanks for your feedback. For backups, we have always supported any OS supported by VMware, so maintaining XP for as long as VMware supports it should not be a problem. I've been talking about dropping support for Windows XP for installing Veeam B&R components on (such as proxies and repositories). Thanks!

We only use Windows XP Pro x86 as a VM for running a couple of applications that we can't find suitable replacements for under anything newer, and because the drivers for a Xerox WorkCenter M24 copier/printer will not handle duplex printing except under XP.

We don't use for anything relating to the infrastructure of Veeam.

For Veeam B&R components I'd say drop support for XP, no need for that.

Besides MS dropping support for XP, Veeam really needs modern hardware - and driver support for modern hardware and XP is sketchy at best. Windows Server 2003 on the other hand ... but IIRC support for that is still there.

I would guess that Veeam can back up any virtual machine that can run under VMware or Hyper-V, maybe without advanced application support and such, but a crash consistent backup via VM snapshot should always be possible, right?

Right, it could even be transactionally consistent, if hypervisor native quiescing capabilities are used.

If you're referring to installing Veeam B&R server on Windows Server 2003, then it is already not supported in the current version (see our System Requirements), though you can still install other Veeam server components there (proxy and repository), and you will be able to continue to do so (we are only dropping Windows XP support).
