Windows 2008 R2 supported?
I have installed one server with SCOM R2 Windows 2008 R2 (working) imported the MP
and one server with all the veeam tools (Manageament Center, UI, Collector) and
everything is working nice can connect to the ESXi 4 from IE the agent is installed (proxy enabled)
correctly and monitored in SCOM, in the nworksEventLog everything looks OK
in SCOM i can see the collector status etc
However thats about all i get, i cant get any topology information.
So everything is looking good except one thing on the collector i have one failure
in the Operations Manager EventLog
Event ID 21414
Data was found in the output, but has been dropped because the Event Policy for the process started at 14:03:45 has detected errors. The 'StdErr' policy expression:
\a+
matched the following output:
C:\Program Files\System Center Operations Manager 2007\Health Service State\Monitoring Host Temporary Files 12\58\VMwareTopologyDiscovery.vbs(1496, 40) (null): Data error (cyclic redundancy check).
Command executed: "C:\Windows\system32\cscript.exe" /nologo "VMwareTopologyDiscovery.vbs" {E46C19A8-B0CB-B648-2C1F-092819E7FD92} {7948E74C-A240-D67B-809E-D718C0B68466} Collector01.test.com "C:\Program Files (x86)\nworks\VIC\Collector\" ALL 0 ALL true false false
Working Directory: C:\Program Files\System Center Operations Manager 2007\Health Service State\Monitoring Host Temporary Files 12\58\
One or more workflows were affected by this.
Workflow name: nworks.VMware.VEM.Topology.SV100
Instance name: nworks Virtual Infrastructure Collector
Instance ID: {7948E74C-A240-D67B-809E-D718C0B68466}
Management group: SCOMTEST
Other MPs i have installed the scripts is working fine on the Agent server
So i installed everything on a 2003 Server (same things like on 2008 R2 server)
And thats working i get an Event ID 999
VMwareTopologyDiscovery : v5.0.1.179
Discovery 'ALL' Complete!
Read 50 Nodes.
1 API connection(s) discovered;
1 Host(s) discovered;
3 Datastore(s) discovered;
Script completed in 1.96875s
And in SCOM everthing looks really nice Topology populated and information is coming in
(perf, alerts, guests, etc etc).
All the servers is in same domain, running with same accounts, and no policys
all accounts im using local, domain admins. root etc.....
No FW, no UAC etc....
They are identical except for the OS one running 2003 (x86) and the other 2008 R2 (x64)
Im just using some test environment but it would be nice if it could work on 2008 R2
So does it work on 2008 R2 or is it some other failure im having???
Any tips =)

Re: Windows 2008 R2 supported?
Hi Peter,
We know of no specific problem with Win 2008 R2....
However have you applied this hotfix (it's listed in our MP Guide) - support.microsoft.com/kb/968760
This fixes issues with .Net applications and the reading of XML files (our Collector is .Net, and topology is in XML)
We only recommend it for SCOM R2, but in fact Microsoft tell us the problem was first found in x64 systems (which your Win2008 R2 system is)
Can you try the hotfix? Meantime I will investigate your error in more detail....
Cheers
Alec

Re: Windows 2008 R2 supported?
I have added IE and .NET 3.5.1 on my server as i understand the previous versions of .NET is also included
KB968760 “update does not apply to this system” x64 bit version, and cant install either .NET 2.0 or SP1 or SP2 (says i already have that installed).
And KB968760 dont know but i only see supported versions 2008 and not 2008 R2 on what versions that the hotfix is applied and i cant get it in, i tried some other solutions to install the KB but without any luck (http://blogs.technet.com/kevinholman/ar ... r-rms.aspx) and (http://www.msfn.org/board/net-installat ... bddeb72889) i even downloaded and installed .NET 4 (beta) just for fun =)
Anyway i cant get the KB mentioned above installed on my 2008 R2 system it only says “update does not apply to this system” so either i dont have the right .NET somehow or thats already included.

Re: Windows 2008 R2 supported?
Hi Peter,
OK thanks.....not sure whether the hotfix update is included already in 2008 R2, or if it is a version-check problem in the hotfix....I will try to find out with Microsoft.
Meantime I am also confirming with our Test and QA the status of Win 2008 R2 testing.
Meantime - can you for the moment use a SCOM server on Win 2003 or Win 2008 (not R2)? We officially support Win 2003 and 2008, both x86 and x64.
I'll update you ASAP,
Thanks!
Alec

Hi peter,
We've got the same problem here.
We installed Vcenter on Windows 2008 r2 server and installed the Nworks Collector, Center server and Center UI on this server, but the topology is not discoverd.
Hotfix KB968760 cannot be applied.
Did you reproduce this error already?
Regards,
Frank

Re: Windows 2008 R2 supported?
Hi Frank, Peter,
Just to confirm we have repro'd the error here - only in Win 2008 _R2_ version - the specific error is "Data error (cyclic redundancy check)" as above.
We're working both internally and with Microsoft on the root cause.
Frank - I'd also like to ask you, how big is the VMware environment you want to monitor? Because to share the nworks Collector with other applications (such as vCenter) is generally not recommended - only for small VMware deployments, or for lab/testing/POC. To make the Collector a dedicated virtual machine is better. (and for the specific discovery error in this thread, at the moment make that a Windows 2008 server , not 2008 R2)
Will update this thread ASAP with progress on the 2008 R2 research,
Regards,
Alec

Hi Alec,
Our VMware enviroment is not so big, 5 hosts, +/- 90 vm's.
Do you recommend a dedicated VM?

Frank

Hello Frank,
Yes, it is better to deploy collector on a dedicted machine (VM or physical box), please have a look at the following thread discussing the same question, hope it helps: New to NWorks
Thank you.

I'm experiencing the same problem with a Windows 2008 R2 installation. Is there any update to this or a timeframe for a fix? Thanks.

Re: Windows 2008 R2 supported?
I have installed Management center version:5.0.3.248 on Windows 2008 R2 and have this event in Operations Manager Event Log:
ID: 999
VMwareTopologyDiscovery : v5.0.3.248
Discovery 'ALL' Complete!
Read 2 Nodes.
1 API connection(s) discovered;
0 Host(s) discovered;
0 Datastore(s) discovered;
Script completed in 1.953125E-02s
No one ESX host in SCOM Console, no one VM. Only VEM and vCenter.
Is there any idea?

Hi KOA!
Try to install the NET 3.5.1 on 2008R2 server, where you have your VIC - collector installed, that should help!!!

Re: Windows 2008 R2 supported?
Hi Oleg,
Everything is working OK - except that your Collector is publishing an ''empty'' topology....no Hosts, no VMs.
Please look in the nworks Management Center UI -
* Have you checked the box for vCenter and ESX Hosts? (on Connected Servers tab)
* Are the Clusters and Hosts assigned to a Collector for monitoring? (on Monitoring Jobs tab)
And in SCOM-
* Do you see any errors from Enterprise Manager or Collector(s) in the SCOM View ''Enterprise Manager Dashboard''?
If all the above are ok, please log a call with our Support team - they can research further for you.
Thanks!
Alec
