List a virtual machine service or process

Post by snakes »

Im looking for a PowerCli or simular solution to list a process or service in all VMs in a cluster. All forum threads seems to point to requirement of direct network connectitivity with combination of user/password to access the VMs. An option to get this info from the VMs vmware tools or by another method would be nice if possible.

Hello,
Indeed currently you can observe the processes and services with Veeam ONE and you need direct connectivity and credentials. I'll discuss PowerCLI option with developers.
By the way, how many VMs do you have in the cluster?
Do you want persistent real-time monitoring or just a dump of all processes?
Thanks!

Not many Vms, approx 300.

Just a dump of processes or services, or a specific process/service would be nice.

Got it, will talk to developers.
And what's the use case, what are going to do with such a list?
Thanks

To generate Veeam one alarms if processes or services are present/not present on VMs.

Not having credentials it's not possible to get list of processes/services via api wmware.
You can get the list without direct connection if guest tools are installed, but creds are still required.

According to our scalability tests, it's possible to collect services/processes with 300 connections to VMs.
Have you already tried to use the alarms?
Thanks!

Yes, tried that. Im missing a central username/password repository in Veeam One where I can input all usernames and passwords for our VMs. Credentials can then to be assigned to Cluster/Vms.

Now I have to select the vm object and input the username/password for each node making this an administrative nightmare. But I might have missed something?

Hi Tor,

If you can use the same domain admin credentials for all VMs, then you can try setting global account over here.

Thanks!

This is excactly the problem. The Vms in question is a mix of 3 separate domains and many workgroup computers with separate username/passwords. The Credential settings contains only one username and password. Im missing a credential feature similar to Veeam B&R where Guest OS credentials can be stored and re-used. This does still not help regarding the network connectivity issue, theres as powercli solution request.

Ah, I see. Yes, specifying settings on the container objects is something we wanted to add down the road.
