Service Provider Multi-Tenant Veeam One

Post by cwhitehbllp »

It's been a while since I've checked in about this, but I was wondering if there is an official/unofficial guidance on how one might leverage Veeam One for monitoring of multiple tenants in a service provider scenario WITHOUT necessarily having wide-open VPNs between each client and the Veeam One server?

A few years ago, we had some success with VeeamPN (pre Wireguard and excluding DNS and overlapping subnet issues), but ultimately, it was just too much headache for too little return. Running a Veeam One server at every client is not the end of the world, but rolling up to a single-pane of glass would be very nice.

It seems if Veeam had an agent that could do everything local to the client (talk to vcenter, pull DNS info, query hosts and VMs, etc.) then ship it securely to a centralized Veeam One server, they'd have a winning service provider product on their hands.

Thanks,
Chris

Hi Christopher,

Thanks for reaching out.

From the architecture perspective, nothing has changed, so you still have to install VONE either at every customer or deal with networking and security aspects to be able to connect your Veeam ONE instance to each tenant VBR server. However, what has changed is during past releases we were extensively expanding REST API and one of the reasons behind this is we would like to be able to provide a way for pulling data from multiple remote VONE servers in an SP environment. Using the preview version REST API v2 (added in VONE v11a) you can get the tenant data into centralized monitoring and ITSM solutions, such as Splunk, Grafana, ServiceNow, and so on. We are planning to roll out a production-ready version of this API in the upcoming v12 release which means you have raised your question at the right time :). In the future, we'll keep adding new capabilities to the REST API to cover a wider range of use-cases and features of the future VBR and other Veeam product releases.

Thanks

Thanks for the feedback. So the go-forward path looks like writing your own dashboard to roll-up data from multiple VONE servers via the REST API v2 not Veeam coming out with a VSPC for Veeam One focused on infrastructure health and monitoring the way VSPC is focused on backup health and reporting?

Hi Christopher,

Thanks for getting back.

I explained the scenario when you need to get to the details, not just high-level data.

Regarding VSPC, @Natalia Lupacheva, @Vitaliy S. could you please comment on that?

Thanks

Yes, using REST API with a home-build dashboard should be a way to go for now. However, what would be the top 3 metrics/features you would like to see in VSPC if it starts collecting data from Veeam ONE servers?

As a service provider, I would say my top 3 metrics/features would be.
1. Availability-scoped alarms - uplink lost, drive dropped, PSU dropped. The big ones
2. Performance-scoped alarms, typically with a VBR impact - VMTools not running, datastore performance, VM performance, snapshot age, orphaned snapshots, CBT
3. Subset of reporting - Undersized VMs, Oversized VMs, Garbage Files, all Veeam Backup reports.

Christopher,

Ok, thanks for the clarification. Out of curiosity, what's the breakdown between clients willing to pay for monitoring their infrastructure as opposed to solely Agent/VBR-based backup customers?
