veeam one complains about missing avhdx

Post by tym »

Hi,

every now and then, VEEAM one fires event 12240 (Microsoft-Windows-Hyper-V-VMMS) Cannot open VM attachment.
Depending on the time of occurrence, I would guess these snapshots are associated with the VEEAM B&R backup, and they are acutally supposed to not be there once the backup has finished. So why does VO complain about them?

Thanks in advance.

Best,
Tim

Hi Tim,

Does this happen for all VMs or for some particular one?

Thanks!

Do you have any snapshots for these disks, any redirection? BTW, what type of virtual disks do you use for these VMs?

no snapshots and no redirection. two of the vms are linux guests. one is server 2003. disk format is vhdx.

What is the path of missing avhdx file? Is it the same storage where all VM files are located?

Hi,

sorry for the late reply. The path is always the one where the corresponding vhdx is located.
Example
"C:\ClusterStorage\volume4\nagios\Virtual Hard Disks\nagios.vhdx" is the original vhdx
Error message says Attachment 'C:\ClusterStorage\volume4\nagios\Virtual Hard Disks\nagios_083E1BB9-E834-4264-A0A5-66FE5CF86459.avhdx' not found
And, as mentioned in my initial post: it seems as if the error messages are always referring to snapshot files which are created during veeam backup.

Best,
Tim

If it's triggered during the backup activity, can you take a look at job session and then compare it with the time when this event was triggered. What is the specific operation running at this time?

Hi,

Job session has no errors, but the windows eventlog has several corresponding entries:
Source: VSS ID:12289
Volume Shadow Copy Service error: Unexpected error while calling GetStorageDependencyInformation. hr = 0x8007048f, The device is not connected.
this Event is logged several times consecutively, with different additional information:
Operation: Add a Volume to a Shadow Copy Set
Operation: Automatically choosing a diff-area volume, Processing EndPrepareSnapshots
and so on.

Are you using software VSS or hardware VSS on this Hyper-V box?

Ok, can you take a look at the time stamp of the event and check what backup session was doing at that very moment? Our support team can assist you with this task.

Hi
I can see 7 VMs within one minute before and after the event that start vm processing using the same source proxy. Is there something like a max concurrecnt vss snapshot creation?

I believe this happens when VM snapshot (avhdx) is created and deleted, so it should be safe to ignore this alert. On the other hand, it's not clear why other VMs do not report on this. Is there anything in common between these VMs? Maybe they are located on the same datastore, host, etc?
