Veeam ONE vs VEM
Can anyone tell me the difference between these two? Sorry for my ignorance, as I don't have much experience with these products.
I was plannign on setting up VeeamONE to test but heard lots of talk of VEM. I tried to find comparisons but was not able to find much.
Thanks

Re: Veeam ONE vs VEM
Hello,
the reason for "no comparison" is, that there is hardly anything to compare.
Enterprise Manager's main purpose is centralized management and license distribution over multiple backup servers, and a self-service backup / restore portal. Yes, it has a very limited overview about the jobs... https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backu ... ml?ver=100
VeeamONE's main purpose is monitoring and reporting of the backup infrastructure with detailed and flexible reports. It also monitors / reports the VMware and Hyper-V.
- https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/one/m ... ml?ver=100
- https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/one/r ... ml?ver=100
As I said, almost nothing in common except that they are both Veeam products
Best regards,
Hannes
PS: both products can be downloaded as trial version to check out what you need

Re: Veeam ONE vs VEM
Thanks, clear enough.
Reading Step 12 of the upgrade information herehttps://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backu ... ml?ver=100:
Are you using Veeam Backup Enterprise Manager server added to Veeam ONE? If yes, first upgrade Veeam ONE, second upgrade Veeam Backup Enterprise Manager, third upgrade Veeam Backup & Replication.
Does this mean you require Veeam ONE to use VEM, or are they still separate and simply have some integration?

Re: Veeam ONE vs VEM
Veeam ONE can directly connect to Veeam B&R servers as well as connect to Veeam Backup Enterprise Managers. It is simply a way to discover the VBR infrastructure (either via EM or via adding standalone VBR servers). Thanks!

Re: Veeam ONE vs VEM
Don't know if this relates but if you are not using VEM for self restore or any major tasks then perhaps better to point Veeam ONE at the VEM database rather than the VBR database in order to put less pressure on the VBR database. I don't know if that makes sense but thought I would put it out there.

Re: Veeam ONE vs VEM
Pointing Veeam ONE to VEM does not put less stress on VBRs, as data collection still goes from VBR servers (not EM), as EM does not have all the required data anyway.

Re: Veeam ONE vs VEM
Hi Vitaly. Yes but I am assuming the VEM periodically polls the VBR for updates and so you would think that this would require less resource use on the VBR. I could be wrong. I was thinking specifically about cloud connect. Thanks

Re: Veeam ONE vs VEM
VEM is used for aggregated license calculation and for gathering VBR topology, once the topology is initlizaed, all connections failover to individual VBR servers. Hope it helps!

Re: Veeam ONE vs VEM
ah ok thanks Vitaliy that is good to know. I did not realize it was just gathering topology and not duplicating records. I guess if I looked at the DB size this would have become evident.
cheers

Re: Veeam ONE vs VEM
So how does VEM is licensed?
Do I still need a separate license for VEM even if i have all the proper licensing for my Veeam B&R?
I'm confuse as to how VEM is license or if I need to license it separately to be able to use it and get support.
Thanks

Hello Storageguy,
VEM is a part of VBR bundle, so an additional license is not required. However, note that VEM is not available in Community Edition.
Thanks

Re: Veeam ONE vs VEM
So as long as I have VBR or Veeam Availability Suite licenses I can use VEM?
I don't see it in the feature comparison though.
Thanks,

Hello,
Yes, you can.
In feature comparison doc, you can see a separate point describing Enterprise manager:
Thanks!

Re: Veeam ONE vs VEM
Ohh, honestly I did not know that either, more great info here. Just to follow up on that though there's seem to be a clear check mark on the Standard, with a note "other suites have the ability to do full job management and restores". What CAN you do with standard? just check jobs statuses?

Yes, it's a basic job overview for centralized monitoring, as well as centralized license management.
