VMs coming up in only a couple of ESXi hosts

Post by spider32 »

We have observed that when we test our Orchestration Plan with Datalab, the VMs only come up in a couple of ESXi hosts. We have turned on auto DRS so thinking that the VMs should spread out among our dozen ESXi hosts.

Has anybody seen this behavior? We are using Advance Host configuration with our vDS configured on all ESXi hosts as wll on the Datalab. Have tried several time but still doing the same thing.

Hi, it may depend on your DRS settings - if they are conservative, they will not move VMs unless resources require it. Are the hosts (running the VMs) overloaded?
There are other Orchestrator settings that influence this, such as the Recovery Location (if this is a Restore plan).
It is probably best to open a support case with us - Support team will gather all the required info. You can post the support ID here so we can see that too. Thanks!

Our setting for DRS is fully automated and VM distribution to even number across the hosts. But will go ahead and open one. Thanks much.

This has been resolved. Found out the DR tag we had on most of our esxi hosts were gone except for a couple of esxi hosts that was why the VMs were just coming up on those two. This may have happened when those hosts were upgraded to using SSD for bootup instead of USB and tag was not put back on most.

Thanks for the update - glad the mystery is solved!
Do you have any feedback on the Tag method we use in Orchestrator? Would you prefer some other method to pick infrastructure objects?
Thanks!

I think the Tag method in the Orchestrator is great. Maybe an alternative method in case of tags not being available.
