Can Veeam direct restore to Azure with UEFI vmware vms?

Veeam Logoby davidb1234 » Fri May 19, 2017 3:04 pm

We are currently having an issue where we cannot use OMS or other products to sync our UEFI VMware vms to Azure because Azure does not support UEFI/GEN2 vms.

Is the new Veeam direct restore to Azure handle this or support restoring UEFI VMware vms direct to Azure? How does it accomplish this?

Hi David, UEFI VMs will be converted to BIOS-based during restore, so no issues with restoring such VMs into Azure. There are, however, some other limitations that you should be aware of (e.g. maximum disk size), so please review this user guide section. This page might also be useful. Thanks.

WOW! Is there a way to use Veeam to convert/restore VMware UEFI vms to BIOS on premise and not in Azure? That would be huge.

Just saw the announcement about Veeam PN as well as DR in Azure. Looks like I will soon be able to replicate VMs for DR to Azure and handle UEFI to bios conversion? What version/when will this functionality be Generally Available and not in preview?

Hi David,

Just to make sure. This is not a replication solution. Veeam PN makes it easy to build a VPN to Azure very quickly and efficiently without the hassle of complicated setups and networking and so on. When that is done, you can use direct restore to Microsoft Azure to restore any backup as a VM in Azure IaaS. But it is (as said) not replication.

Ahh.. That is very disappointing. is that coming? I am being forced to look at other products right now because Veaam can't create replicas in Azure. I don't want to use OMS... Or Zerto... I want to use Veeam.

Can Veeam Azure Restore a UEFI VMware vm to azure and then restore it back as a BIOS VM? We are being faced with the version serious issue of having all UEFI vms and Azure not supporting UEFI/GEN2 right now.....

You can restore to Azure but then you would need to install the agent inside that VM and backup and restore on-premises. That would restore it in the state as it is running in Azure

Has anyone run into any problems with this? I am being told by a customer that when UEFI is enabled, DR2A results in a non working VM but no real error is received.

Peter,

Can the customer give more information and (preferred) log a support call? This might be for many reasons why the VM is not working and only through investigation of the logs we will be able to find it

Thanks
Mike

FYI -- We identified that when a Azure proxy is not selected during the DR2A process, the restore is not successful. When a Azure proxy is defined, the bios transformation is successful and the VM boots in Azure as desired.

UEFI-Bios conversion happens without proxy server involved. So, usage of Azure Proxy should not have any affect the process anyhow. Reach our support team for further assistance. Thanks.
