It possible to manage Veeam Agent for Windows from Azure

Post by govi » Apr 22, 2019 6:46 am

Hi Team,

Could you please let me know if its possible to setup Veeam B&R server in Azure and deploy and Manage Veeam Agent for Windows from Azure(workstation Edition or Server Edition license). Reason for looking this option is because we have got few roaming and VIP user so most of the time they are outside office. VIP users data, we are backuping on On premise NAS but challenge we are facing when user is outside for long time. Backup keeps failing since he outside the network.

If user is outside for more then a month, then we don't have backup for entire month. So its mostly figure crossed situation. In between something goes wrong to laptop then we are not in position to provide data to user since we dint backup the data.

Is there any way that we have Veeam B&R server setup in Azure with Repository created on same server or make use of some reliable storage which can does the backup very quickly assuming laptop has 10Mpbs/2 Mbps speed.

Thanks,

Govi

You can install VBR in Azure and use it for agent backups. You can leverage azure disks for this on either the vbr server or add additional repositories.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply.

Could you please point me right KB where it explains step by step how to setup veeam VBR in Azure and setup repository. I did some research but could not get right KB.

Thanks,
Govi

The setup is the same as with regular installation in a datacenter. Deploy an instance with the correct system requirements and install VBR from ISO. For the repository, I suggest using ReFS as a target repo.

Is Azure VM pingable from machine that has agent installed? Are all ports opened in accordance with this table? Thanks!

Hi,

Finally i managed to connect to azure repository and configure agent successfully.
now my setup is following
Azure server has veeam backup and replication installed.
Created D partition with 1TB space and its my Backup repository.
Opened requested ports on 10001&10005 and 25000to 5000 on azure and rest of the port which are mentioned in table.

but when i try to do the backup it gives below error.

Error: A connection attempt failed because the connected party did not properly respond after a period of time, or established connection failed because connected host has failed to respond 10.X.X.X:2500.

Any Clue on above error?

I am not sure if its right solution like creating additional partition and presenting as repository to veeam server.

Thanks,

Govi

Sorry for keeping silence - the issue reported still looks like a connectivity problem, so, if I were you, I'd reach our support team and let them confirm the environment. Thanks!

Hi V.eremin,

After endless efforts, i contacted veeam support and as per them we need to set repository as cloud connect and to set cloud connect we need to be VCP. I am using standard license so i need to upgrade license to higher version.

if you try to access normal repository using public IP address of azure then it will not allow you to write any data on repository. I can reach to repository using public IP address of Azure server but when i try to run backup job, job fails.

Thanks,

Govi

You should be able to reach Azure repository via public IP as long as all:

- necessary ports are opened between Azure and local backup infrastructure
- or site-to-site VPN tunnel is set up

Also, if you're satisfied with the level of support provided, kindly, ask your for ticket escalation.

Thanks!
