Restore encrypted VMs to Azure?

Post by HouseAtreides » Jul 25, 2019 9:48 pm

Hi

I searched but didn't see if this has been asked already. I have a ticket open with Veeam support but not sure they understand what I am asking.

I have VMs encrypted using vSphere 6.5's encryption storage policy, using a 3rd party KMS for the encryption keys. I understand that I can create a backup job for these VMs and then restore them back to the same ESXi 6.5 hosts, in the same vSphere environment they came from.

But what about restoring those encrypted VMs to Azure? My Azure doesn't have access to the original vCenter, ESXi hosts or KMS, so what does Veeam do when restoring VMs?

Do they get restored as unencrypted VMs in Azure?
Is using BitLocker a better approach?

Thanks
HA

Hi

So when Veeam takes a backup of the encrypted VM (that is encrypted by vSphere 6.5), is the backup unencrypted? Then I can make the backup encrypted by adding a password to the Veeam backup job?

Thanks

Correct, to protect the backup with encryption key you must enable encryption in the job settings. Thanks!
