Dell ML3 parallel rewind of tapes
Hi All,
quick question is it possible with VBR in interaction with Dell ML3 to rewind tapes parallel?
We are using in total 12 Streamer simultaneously and it looks like when the backup job is finished that VBR is completing one tape after the other (rewind and export). It takes per tape 5 minutes in total 1 hour.
In our opion the rewind process should be executes per tape simultaneously and only the export of the tapes successively.
Is there something that I have to configure in VBR ?
Regards,
Oliver

Hi Oliver,
Not sure off the top of my head on this, let me check internally. I suspect that the rewind may be tied to the export process like you're seeing hence the sequential processing, but will confirm and update.

Re: Dell ML3 parallel rewind of tapes
Clarified it, unfortunately at this time we don't have a means to control / configure parallel rewinds.
In actuality, Veeam doesn't send a "rewind" command, this is part of the eject process when the tape is taken out of the drive. This is largely gated by the number of robotic arms the library has rather than anything Veeam does specifically.
However, your point is understood on the length of time needed with current workflow, will discuss potential improvements on the eject / rewind process.

Re: Dell ML3 parallel rewind of tapes
Hi David,
would be great to get an improvement for such kind of scenario. For the future we are planning to increase the amount of streamers because of the backup workload. Do you know if parallel controll can be realized with a script?

Not with Veeam cmdlets, no. If your tape library allows remote commands via CLI, you could write a script and perhaps set it as a scheduled task or a post-job script.Do you know if parallel controll can be realized with a script?
