What is the manual process to restore a Hyper-v VM?

I have a customer that has restored from VEEAM the XML file and VHD file. What is the process to recreate the Virtual Machine from these two files?

Thanks

Bryan

Bryan, the fastest way is to restore the entire VM from the backup, please see the detailed instructions here.

@foggy I'm not sure if that answered @AnichaNet's question but mine is similar.
I have restored a vbk from tape to a Hyper-V host that has no Veeam installed. I used Veeam.Backup.Extractor.exe to restore a VM and it appears the only 'useful' files available to me are an XML file and a VHD file (as per @AnichaNet).
I really have no idea what to do next (which I think maybe is @AnichaNet's question).
I have tried to run the Hyper-V import wizard (also via powershell) and it fails with this message: "The virtual machine configuration could not be read. The data might be corrupt or not valid."

So is this an issue with my method? Or is the file actually corrupted and I wasted 8 hours restoring it from tape :) ?

cheers

Hey all,

So no, it won't be corrupted and you didn't waste 8 hours. What you see is something that happens quite often in the world of Hyper-V I'm afraid.

1. Can you open the XML file with notepad? Normally that should work and you should be able to see the "config" of the VM in there (RAM/ CPU/ Network/ ...)
2. Recreate the virtual machine in Hyper-V and attach the disk to it
3. Boot

That should do the trick

Thanks Mike.

I was hoping that wouldn't been the case. So a manual recreation of Hyper-V VMs it is... prrrrp!

Cheers
