Backing up a Failover Cluster File Server Role

Hi,

I'm checking in again for idea on backing up a 'File Server' role in a Failover Cluster. I saw a post before that said the file storage has to be hosted on a VM, but I'm trying to avoid having to do that. Is that the absolute only way to do backup a file server role?

Failover Cluster roles are not backed up by Veeam B&R, as this product does VM-image level backups.
