Implementation Issue with the GFS Concept

Post by Kimme »

Hello,

I need help implementing a GFS concept for external backup to tape. We don't have a tape library; instead, we have a tape drive where I have to change the media manually.
In short, the “Backup to Disk” job performs a full backup all al our vsphere virtual machines from Tuesday at 12:00 a.m. to Saturday at 12:00 a.m. I’d like to back this up to tape using GFS with 18 tapes. To do this, 5 tapes should be used in rotation daily, 12 tapes monthly, and 3 annual tapes.
As far as I know, however, the GFS job for the tape backup cannot be set to run from Tuesday through Saturday (for backups from Monday through Friday), but instead runs “Every Day.” This means that when I insert the Monday tape on Monday, the job from the previous day is triggered immediately, and I then run into problems with retention because I’ve set it to 7 days (for example, if I insert the tape at 12:10 p.m. in the first week and at 10:00 a.m. the following week, the retention policy takes effect). The tape backup should run as smoothly as possible, and this confusion with retention and timeouts sometimes causes the Monday 3:00 a.m. tape job—which isn’t intended for this purpose—to run, and occasionally even the Tuesday 3:00 a.m. tape job, which is correctly scheduled for this purpose.

To put it simply: I just want to exclude Saturday (start time: Sunday at 3:00 a.m.) and Sunday (start time: Monday at 3:00 a.m.) from the daily GFS tape job.

Does anyone have any ideas, or would I have to create 5 regular tape jobs for the daily backups and then switch to the GFS approach for 12 monthly and 3 yearly backups? Would I also need to create a second backup-to-disk job in that case?
