Migrate over Cloud Connect with Agent

Post by GabesVirtualWorld »

A new customer running inside a datacenter that is not ours and we don't have vCenter access. We need to migrate their VMs to our datacenter so I was thinking about using Linux Agent (most VMs) and our Cloud Connect portal to migrate these VMs to our datacenter. Preferably they land on Hyper-V but I'm not sure if that is possible.

When using Linux Agent to backup to our Cloud Connect, can I restore as a VM easily or do I need to create base OS to restore to. I'd probably need to build a recovery base image?

Unfortunately there is also some older CentOS 6 & 7 that is not on the supported list, is there any other way to handle those?

Hi Gabrie,

The most recent version of Veeam Agent for Linux no longer supports CentOS. CentOS 6 has not been supported by Veeam products for years. Its end of life was in November 2020, and CentOS 7 reached end of life in June 2024.
Instead of simply copying all VMs into your infrastructure, I would recommend starting a project to migrate the customer applications to supported Linux distributions instead. As a service provider, I probably would not want to run outdated Linux builds in my own infrastructure.

Regarding restore capabilities with Veeam, our upcoming version 13.1 will bring more target options for service providers to restore tenant backups to. One of the features will be Instant Recovery to Hyper-V. But as long your customer doesn't use supported Linux builds, you won't be able to use this features.

Thank you for your reply.
In the current situation, for the supported VMs (the bigger part), what would be the way to go with the current 13.x version?
Agent backup to Veeam Cloud Connect and then restore in our DC. But do I need an empty base image for that or can Veeam create a VM on the fly?

Yes, the agent will work. For Windows, I expect it to work without issues.
For Linux VMs, I strongly recommend testing first. Linux can be a challenge when you change hypervisors or platforms.
Can Veeam create a VM on the fly?
Yes. There is no need to install a base OS first.
Today, with version 13.0.x, you can use Instant Recovery to VMware vSphere directly from the Veeam Cloud Connect server backup console: Help Center.

With version 13.1, you will be able to restore to more hypervisor targets. Hyper-V is one of them.
