SQL transaction log backup restore point

Post by matteu »

Hello,

Is it possible to know what is exactly restore point when I go to home -> backup -> disk -> SQL job name -> VM name and column restore point.

I'm asking because I configure backup log each 15 min and keep only last 24hours and I can see for some VM I have more than 10k restore point.

I guess it's probably the number of SQL query present in the logs right ?

Because for 1 per 15 min should be :
4 per hours
96 restore point per days and here it's so much more :)

Thanks for your answer.

Hi matteu

Can you please confirm what type of backup?
VM/Agent Backup with Transaction Log Backup or MSSQL plugin?

I also moved your question to our "Application" subforum.

Nope, it is the number of transaction log backups.

I'm not sure what "keep only last 24hours" means. There are 2 retention types:
1. "Until the corresponding image-level backup is deleted" - the same retention policy for image-level backups and transaction log backups
2. "Keep only last <N> days of log backups" - allows keeping transaction logs for a specific number of days. (15 default)

More info can be found here.

How many databases do you have on the affected VMs?

Thanks!

Hello,

It's VM backup with transaction log with guest application processing (no plugin)

It's 1 days yes sorry :) (keep last 24h is correct but you're right, the wizzard only allow day :) )
Image

Normally, that means I can restore a VM and select exactly what transaction log on the 24 last hours but if it's more, it's only the image VM backup I can select.
Then, I have an RPO on 15 min for these workload base on this configuration.

Am I correct ?

Let's take 1 VM for this, I have 6 database for it and 13.5k restore point availables !

If it's the number of transaction log backup, it should be 96 right ?

There is 37 image backup of this VM.
