V12.1 latest patch "Last catalog is incomplete." -> Tape Backups failing

Post by mkretzer »

Case 07200495

We have a strange new issue that started after installing the january Veeam patch: Tape Backups are failing nearly at the end with "Last catalog is incomplete".
Our current workaround is to set the problematic tapes to "protect" and force Veeam to use other tapes.

What we do not understand is the reason why this happens. According to support the tape is full (which is correct) AND "CleaningCyclesLeft: 0" which should be the cause of the issue:
[Tape XXXXXXL8] Updating, Capacity 11999999164416, Remaining 0, PartitionCount 1, IsWriteProtected False, IsWorm False, UsageStatistic {LifetimeRead: 11641082MB, LifetimeWritten: 34490122MB, LoadCount: 16, CleaningCyclesLeft: 0}

I do not understand how "CleaningCyclesLeft" for a non-cleaning data tape are relevant for a catalog issue! Does anyone have an idea?

Hi @mkretzer,

The suggestion indeed does look to be inaccurate if we're talking about data tapes instead of cleaning tapes. I've requested that the Support Engineer on the case take a deeper look in the debug logs and focus a bit more on the "history" of the tape (new tape, previously used with Veeam/other software, etc), so let's allow a bit more time to check more deeply on this.

If there are further concerns that the issue is not being understood well, don't hesitate to use the Talk to a Manager option from the case portal to request that the case be reviewed by Support Management: https://www.veeam.com/kb2320

Its not only on one tape. It has happened on 3 tapes in two different jobs since the update. It NEVER happened before with V12.1/V12

Got it, if possible please do note this on the case (I see the Engineer is still reviewing the current data), but this will help to narrow down the investigation.

@andre.simard Up until now i believed that this would be an issue with old, defective tapes. But since we updated to the latest 12.1 patch we have both this issue (never had it before) and CRC errors (case 07223080).
Did your issues also start with the latest patches?

But since we remove this cartridge, it's working fine

Yes very strange - it seems all our tape issues were/are bad tapes. Since we not reused old tape verification are clean again.
We used http://www.veritape.mptapes.com/ and could easily see that all the tapes showed several issues in multiple drives.
