9.5u4 restore takes 9 hours!! WHY?????????? :)

Post by tommls »

Upgraded successfully to 9.5 Update 4, no obvious errors or issues.

Except...restores now take HOURS.

For example, a 90 GB VM yesterday took 9 hours to restore.
Today another 90 GB restore is projected to require 9 hours.

Is this normal?? Or do the polar vortex and climate change affect restores now??????

It's a 3-day old backup sitting on a *local* Exagrid server, restoring to a VMware 6.0u3 host in the same subnet/datacenter/network.

Other restores I've seen have never taken this long.

I would say completely unexpected.
Based on the rules of this forum, do you have create a support ticket? Please share the number here.

Anyway as this is not a support forum, you can open the case with severity 1 if production restore is affected and our Support SWAT team can help you.

I was curious if others had this problem or if it was only me.
#03391769 is the ticket number.

Right now, it looks like only you. For example, in the adjacent thread it takes 4 min to restore a 40GB VM, so quite a bit faster ;)

Well,

The only reason why would be that you were using hotadd mode before and now after the update it somehow went back to using nbd (network mode). Check the restore to see what transport mode it's using and also, are there any components (proxies) that have not been upgraded?

For anyone who clicked on this fascinating thread topic, it turned out the problem was in the underlying storage.
The HPE RAID controller's BBWC battery was not working, and since the two servers involved are in a Network RAID 1 cluster, anything with heavy writes got slowed down to a "crawl."
Once the BBWC battery and associated capacitor were replaced, things began behaving more normally.
BTW the RAID controllers are configured 50-50 read-write, perhaps someday this will be changed to favor writes.
Hence Veeam was not the problem.

Thanks for following up here. It is good that in the end it works again as expected.
