Bacbkup repository space needed.

Post by JosueM »

Good day everyone.

I have version 7 latest update. There is backup job for 3 file servers vms total to 1.7 TB size. I had a backup repositroy of 1TB and the initial run of the job failed because of not enough disk space on the repository.

Then I added a new backup repository to 1.5 TB size and the inital job run failed again because of not enough disk space on the repository.

Job was created with default settings, how much backup repository space should veeam need to perform this backup?

Thanks in advance.

Is this the total amount of space reported by the guest OS or the actual disk space occupied by VMs on the datastore? What are the Read and Transferred counters in the job stats window at the time the job fails?

Hello foggy,

1.7 TB is the space occupied on the datastore by the 3 VMs we want to backup. Attached is the log of the last retry wwhere you can see the counters.

Thanks

Have you checked free space and existing files on the repository? What kind of repository it is?

Repository free space was 1.5 TB minus 53GB from other backup, the repository is a windows 2008 vm.

I did remove one of the 3 vms so the total size of the VMs to backup is 936GB and same repository, the initial full took 697 GB. I usually do replications not backups but I tought the compression ratio was a little bit better.

Does this seems "normal"?

Compression ratios depends on the data you have inside the VMs. Anyway, looking at your error message I see that your issue doesn't seem to be related to target repository. How much free space do you have on the source datastores hosting these VMs?

Try to allocate more space to your repository as it seems like even if you manage to create 1 full backup, you will still need space for incremental passes.
