Backup from Storage Snapshots with DellEMC Unity iSCSI Volumes
Hi,
I'm trying to get information on how to use the storage snapshot integration for VM backups from VMware with DellEMC Unity iSCSI volumes.
I have a single Physical VEEAM Backup server. I've added the storage array into the Storage Infrastructure section of VEEAM over the management IP of the array.
I know I have to enable backup from storage snapshots on each job.
However,
What's unclear to me is do I have to give the veeam server iscsi connectivity? Do I need to give the VEEAM server iscsi access to each of my ESX volumes also? I can't seem to find any documentation on this anywhere. Any documentation would be useful.
Thanks,
Jody

Re: Backup from Storage Snapshots with DellEMC Unity iSCSI Volumes
Hi,
You need to enable the iscsi initiator on the Veeam proxy server you use (if you have an all-in-one vbr server which sounds like it that server). All other things are done by Veeam, we will mourn everything as needed. So no need for you to map any volumes etc.
Once the iscsi service is enabled try a rescan on the storage you added and it should tell you if it’s able to access the storage.
Feel free to follow up here if needed.
Thanks

So I setup 2 NICs with access to the iSCSI subnet. I can ping the targets. I setup Microsoft iscsi initiator and I added the target IPs on the initiator.
I ran a rescan in VEEAM on the storage array and it is scans clean. I enabled the snapshot integration in the job but when it runs it fails with this error:
3/1/2024 9:22:18 AM :: Failed to create processing task for VM servernamehere Error: Cannot find suitable proxy for retrieving data from storage snapshot, and the option to failover to backup from VM snapshot is disabled
Any ideas?

Hi,
that indicates that the setup is not yet correct.
during the "rescan" you should already be able to see what the proxy can access.
Rescan can be done on the storage in the storage infrastructure, no need to start a job.
If you can find out feel free to open a case and upload the logs as the rescan log will indicate what is missing in the config.
Feel free to post the case ID here as well so I can have a look.

Got this figured out with support. Volume Shadow Copy service has to be running for this to work!
