Backup Job add encryption
Hi all,
We have a Veeam VMware backup jobs that runs as follows on 10 VMs.
Mon,Tues,Wed and Thurs = Incremental Backup then the incremental copied to tape.
Friday = Incremental > Synthetic Full then copied to tape.
I would like to add encryption to the backup job. Can I simply add a password to the existing job? and if I do what will happen the next time it runs?
Trying to avoid tape encryption due to age and different types of tape libraries we use for backup and restores. Keeping the tapes unencrypted and the Full and Incremtntal files themselves encrypted will work better for us.
Jim

Re: Backup Job add encryption
Hi Jim,
If you tick [x] Enable Encryption on a job with existing backups, next run it takes will create an encrypted Full Backup. Subsequent runs will be encrypted Incremental/Synthetics following schedule, retention and job settings you already have.
So answering your question, just make sure you can fit another Full backup and just enable Encryption.
/Cheers!

Thanks, just to be clear, when you said a full backup will be created to you mean a new synthetic backup will be created and encrypted or will the next run trigger an active full backup. I just need to know how much demand will be put on our production environment when it does its next run with encryption enabled.

Re: Backup Job add encryption
Thanks - I am told enabling encryption will slow down the backup job and synthetic full when it is created weekly. Is this correct?

Re: Backup Job add encryption
Veeam encryption does not affect backup size nor it's performance.

Re: Backup Job add encryption
Well... it does, but only ever so slightly more so in v10, which reduces the size of non-encrypted backups metadata.
