Backup only the true vm size

Post by icewolf321 »

Hello, I'm new in this forum.

I have Vmware essential plus and I using veeam free to backup my virtual machines. Now I have some problems to backup one vm up to 2 tb. My vm windows server 2012 that I want to backup is only 70gb space used, but the dedicated space in my esxi is 3 tb. If I want to backup only the true size of the vm (70gb), what can I do? Where can I configure the right setting when will make the backup? The problem is also that I don't have a big storage to backup my full 3tb vm.

thank you :)

Hi,

Please specify how do you perform your backup. You use veeamZip, right?

So, your server OS takes only 70 GB while residing on 3Tb .vmdk? If so, what type of provisioning did you choose?

Have you tried to run the backup? Unused blocks are skipped anyway, so if those empty blocks are not dirty (like written and deleted at the guest os) they will not be saved in the backup.
