Backup procedure for VMWare ESXi host? reference to support case ID #04274400
Dear all,
we have one older ESXi host (5.5.0) and three VMs installed on it.
We would like to backup whole physical host machine since VMs are different operating systems (WS, linux-based Open-E OS).
What is the best practice to do so and can it be done using Veeam B&R Community Edition? I comes up to my mind that we can purchase additional server with storage, install Veeam CE on it, connect them on the same LAN subnet and easily back it up.
Do you maybe know or suggest different approach or method?
Thank you in advance for suggestions!
Best regards,
Dragan

Hi Dragan,
You cannot back up the ESXi host itself, but you can back up VMs running on this host.
Thanks!

Yes, this would work. If you want to review some best practices, then this document should come in handy.akdaa wrote:I comes up to my mind that we can purchase additional server with storage, install Veeam CE on it, connect them on the same LAN subnet and easily back it up.

[MERGED] Is it possible to Backup Vmware HOST installation?
Hi to everyone.
I use VB&R on 3 hosts for backup and replicate VMs.
Now I want to patch my ESXI HOSTs (Vmware 6.5), and as usually for VM and Clients, I want to backup all the installation before patch it.
So, by Veeam B&R, How can I backup each Host Vmware installation, for a bare metal restore if there are some patch problems?
For the Client I can creare a recovery media boot Disk, but for the host I don't know how made it , and if it's possible.
P.s. Only FULL HOST BACKUP solutions, not Vmware configuration backup.
Thanks a lot.

Hi Valerio, backup of an ESXi host itself is not possible with Veeam.
