Backup up specific paths?

Post by g8rfreak »

If you have a VM that you only need to backup specific paths (folders within drives), do you have to use the Windows Agent Backup or is there some other way? Or do you backup the entire volumes even though you it's wasting space? I don't see a way to get more granular with VMware Backup.

Hi g8rfreak

VMWare Backup Jobs are build for entire machine backup scenarios. You can only include all or specific vmdks.
If you have a disaster, you want to restore the entire vm and not rebuild all servers by hand and only restore some files. Better buy enough storage for the entire vm, and save money when a disaster recovery is needed.

Veeam with file level Backup Job would be the only option, if you want to backup a specific path.
If you can put all files from this path on a single virtual
disk, you could use a VM Backup Job to backup this disk.

Hello,

By the way, you can also exclude specific files and folders at the level of VMware Backup job, here is an example.

Thanks!

Thank you! I never would've thought to look in the Application-Aware options for this.
