Backups failing due to low disc space
Hi
The site I'm at currently have multiple backup jobs, and copy jobs running.
Backup running daily at 22:00 to a QSAN (plenty of space)
a 'Daily' which runs at 18:00 to a QNAP and a copy job 00:00 daily to a second QNAP (as some redundancy)
(So, same VM's backing up to a QSAN and then another job running to a QNAP then a copy to another QNAP)
Weekly to the QSAN every Sunday
Monthly to the QSAN every first Sunday
It's the daily backup and copy backup to QNAP that is running out of space
What's my best option in clearing space? Can I safely delete older incrementals from the actual mapped drive on the QNAP or will this cause issues?
Thanks
Jason

Hi Jason,
It's not recommended to manually delete files on the backup storage.
What's your retention / amount of restore points whitin the job settings?
Perhaps you can decrease the amount of restore points, which results in automated cleanup / deleting restore points because of the retention policy.

Re: Backups failing due to low disc space
Depending on the backup method (forward/reversed) you can manually remove some of the older files, however corresponding restore points records will still be displayed in the Veeam B&R console, according to retention settings..

Hi Karl
5 restore points on weekly
10 restore points on daily 22:00
4 restore points on the job that's causing me issues
Could I reduce that to 2, re-run the job?
Thanks

The issue is, retention applies at the end of the successful job run, so you still need space for the job to finish.

Re: Backups failing due to low disc space
I've actually found an older job that was using over 2Tb on the drive - its currently not scheduled and was maybe a one off backup, back in October 2015, so will delete that and see if that kicks the copy job back into life
cheers fellas
great forum BTW so helpful

Re: Backups failing due to low disc space
Please note, if it is a forward incremental job, you cannot delete just some of the incremental files, this will break the chain of restore points that go after them.

Re: Backups failing due to low disc space
I have a similar issue where I was running low of disk space & started a new backup chain (Active Full), and deleted the previous chain and all backups to disk are running/restoring successfully.
The problem is we spool off to tape, and we didn't 'Remove Backup' from Disk view, and the tape backup is still trying to find the chain that doesn't exist.
I read this article about removing restore points from the configuration database, but we host several servers running different versions of Veeam including version 9, but none seem to have this option available:
https://helpcenter.veeam.com/backup/vsp ... point.html
Is there a table where these restore points can be removed?

Re: Backups failing due to low disc space
I've had unexpected space issues myself in the past & wish there was a feature (via the console) to immediately & *cleanly* "Delete x oldest restore points immediately please". it would be so much tidier & safer than diving around the backup files manually which I'm never keen on doing...

On a side note, in order to be proactive with this situation, it is recommended to use Capacity Planning for Backup Repositories report.

Re: Backups failing due to low disc space
In my case, a good percentage of the times I had space issues were when Veeam randomly ran full (as opposed to incremental) backups e.g. mid-week. Thankfully I've not had that happen for some time now.

Re: Backups failing due to low disc space
I was able to correct my issue by changing job to run incremental with fewer restore points (one time), and cleared missing restore points.
But I'm still curious as to why I'm not seeing the 'Console' option to remove restore points, mentioned in the article below.
We are running instances of v8 and v9 for hyperV & vmware hosts, but none show this option available.

Re: Backups failing due to low disc space
This only appears for missing restore points today, but I do have a FR logged to make it available for all.
