Basic questions, and a specific problem.

Post by CBailey » Aug 09, 2012 3:55 pm

Forgive my ignorance. I'm just starting with Veeam.
I have two Dell 1850's. One has ESXi 4.0 Free, and the other has ESXi 4.1 Free. I have 3 VM's, between 15GB and 25GB each. They are connected through a Gigabit switch. The machine I'm running Veeam Backup & Replication 6.1 on is a Windows 7 Laptop connected by WiFi. I vaguely remember that Veeam makes a direct connection between transferring machines, so slow WiFi hopefully shouldn't be an issue. I am trying to move all the VM's from the 4.0 machine to the 4.1 machine.

When I try to move a VM from one machine to another, using Quick Migration, the transfer speed is about 2-3MB/s. At the end, It fails to transfer. I get these errors:
X Hard Disk 1 (12.0 GB) [I'm not sure what the error was, but it had a red circle with an X next to it.]
X Removing snapshot Error: Parameter Count Mismatch
X Failed to process VM 'Web Server VM' at 2012-08-09T024034
X Processing finished with errors at 8/9/2012 2:40:34 AM

When I look at what has transferred, it seems to only have transferred about half the files in the VM directory.

More information:

Duration: 0:58:35
Processing rate: 3MB/s
Bottleneck: Source

Data-
Processed: 12.0GB (100%)
Read: 12.0GB
Transferred: 11.0GB(1.1x)

Status-
Success: 0
Warnings: 0
Errors: 1

As for the files that copied, most seemed OK. None of the *.log files copied, which I suppose is by design. One file, Web Server VM-000001-delta.vmdk, was originally 6GB, but when transferred, was 28KB. Also, another file, Web Server VM-Snapshot1.vmsn, was originally 1GB, but was 27.8KB when transferred. Also, the Web Server VM-aaba0f99.vswp, was not copied.

So, any idea why it's so slow? Does the ESXi machine need to be in maintenance mode first? Is it a licensing restriction of ESXi Free? I tried copying a VM that wasn't in use, with the same problem.

Thanks!

You can easily open a case using our support portal (step-by-step instructions are also provided when you click New Topic).

Btw, though at this time it is possible to backup free ESXi due to some changes in vSphere 5, generally it is not supported.

Thanks for the response. When I click the link, I don't see anything to open a ticket. It also shows no products, so I'm guessing the option would be next to the product. looking closer, I realized I downloaded the Backup Free Edition, which might explain it.

As per our support policy, we attempt to provide support for free edition users as well (just no response guarantees - depends on staff availability and current support load). You just need to log in to the customer center, and then you will be able to create a new support ticket.

OK, I guess I didn't read EVERY word on the page, and found it tucked away. Case # 5210154. Thanks again.

Just got the same error
...
...
X Hard Disk 1 (12.0 GB) [I'm not sure what the error was, but it had a red circle with an X next to it.]
X Removing snapshot Error: Parameter Count Mismatch
X Failed to process VM 'Web Server VM' at 2012-08-09T024034
X Processing finished with errors at 8/9/2012 2:40:34 AM
...
...

Any idea what's the reason for?

Many thanks for any hint!
Rainer

Source is a licensed ESX 4.0
Destination is a licensed ESXi 5.1
