Hello ,
I need some Tipps and Best Practice recommendations for an Veeam Backup Concept :
Configuration :
1x Veeam Backup Server ( Proxy ) DL380 G7 , 2 x Xeon CPU with 12 Cores and 32GB RAM .
1 x FAS2554 Netap per 10GB Network direct attached over private LAN direct to the Backup Server
Backup via Direct San Access from the VM Machine Storage.
The Backup to Disk ( FAS 2554 ) should followed backup to an Tape over an Tape Libary.
Question :
What ist the best Connection to the FAS Backup Target from the Backup Server , ISCSI or NFS ?
What ist the best Backup Methode ? Incremental , Incremental with Syntetic Full ?
How much Restore Points should keep on Disk ?
My Idea is :
Incremental Backup with Syntetic Full , Restore Points 7 Days , then Backup to Tape - Good Idea , Bad Idea ?
Thanks for Ideas and Tipps
Michael

Re: Best Backup Method - Tipps and recommendations ?
Actually if you connect your FAS directly to Backup Server then you'll need to make sure that your DL380 can carry all the jobs. Please check requirements, repository section. The better option would be to have a dedicated server as a repository with direct-atteched iSCSI/NFS FAS. Also FAS is a little bit of overkill for a target repo role. What ist the best Connection to the FAS Backup Target from the Backup Server , ISCSI or NFS ?
You might want to stick with daily incrementals + Fulls on weekends + Backup To Tape at the end of the month. Please also take a look at synthetic fulls brief description and make a decision if you need them or not. If any questions arise don't hesitate to ask. What ist the best Backup Methode ? Incremental , Incremental with Syntetic Full ?
That depends on your RPO and backup storage capacity. How much Restore Points should keep on Disk ?
Thank you.

Re: Best Backup Method - Tipps and recommendations ?
Ok,
I plan to choose the Reverse Incremental , Retention Time 14 Days. After 14 Days a Backup to Tape .
Benefit :
- Less Storage space
- Only one , actual Full Backup File for Backup to Disk
- Faster Recovery Time
What you think about this decision ?

Re: Best Backup Method - Tipps and recommendations ?
It seems valid, though, the chosen mode should not affect the restore time.
As to tape part of the plan, use a backup to tape job and point to a media pool that has "Create a new media set for every backup session" option enabled. This way, one mediaset will will be closed, once the tape job is finished, and contain only one .vbk file. In other words, one tape medium will have one independent full .vbk and it can be used whenever restoration need arises.
Thanks.
