Best way to move old VBK files

Post by stevetNOVUS »

Hi All,

I'm looking for some suggestions on how best to achieve the following:
An old V11 environment stores its data on a Dell Data Domain (this has gone EOL and not under support anymore)
The new enviornment is v12.1 and stores its data on Linux Hardened repositories

The old V11 environment contains a large number of 'yearly' backups that are needed to be kept for a number of years and as such need moving to the new Linux Hardened Repos
The Dell Data Domain is running a firmware/OS version that is NOT supported by v12.1, so I can't add it to the v12.1 environment

At the moment, the method I've found is to use Veeam 11 to 'copy' the files out of the Dell Data Domain to network share
Then using Veeam 12, I copy these files into one of the linux hardened repos and the use Veeam to 'import' the backup
This process works but is slow and cumbersome

Has anyone done something similar and if so, how did you do it?
Many thanks in advance for any ideas
Steve

Hi Steve,

Situation is clear, but I'm afraid the firwmare/OS version likely will be a show-stopper here, as the best way would be to use the Backup Move feature in v12, but given that the Data Domain won't be able to be added in v12, probably it's a no-go.

I'm not sure on the specifics for exporting a DDBoost share over SMB/NFS, and I seem to recall there were some limitations for this, but if it's possible, that + rsync/robocopy might be best, and then just import the backups in via the VBM file. Else, I'm afraid your current strategy will probably be the only one possible.

I can think of other round-about ways with restoring the old backups and backing up the restored machine, but it's also pretty round-about :(

Hi David,

Thanks for the quick reply, I'll have a quick look at the robocopy route as a possible way of getting data out of the DD. Otherwise it will be slow and steady!

Cheers
Steve
