[help] Build spec for Backup server and Gateway Server

Post by TOMMY.TRAN »

Dear all,
I'm a newbie in Veeam,
My model is as below:
[Backup server]--------[proxy + gateway server]------------------[DD EMC]---------------[DR site]

with this specs:

VM-01 VM-02
CPU 4 vCPU 8 vCPU
RAM 16 GB 30 GB
HDD 500 GB 500 GB
NET 10Gbps 10 Gbps
SQL express

Machine name Function | feature installed
VM-01 Veeam backup & replication
Veeam backup enterprise manager
Veeam backup & replication console
Veeam ONE (all in one)
VM-02 Veeam backup proxy server
Gateway server

======================================================================
but my vendor recommend me don't put Proxy server in same location with Gateway server, is case of VM-02 fail ==> all the jobs fail.
he prefers this model:
[Backup server - VAS]--------[gateway server]------------------[DD EMC]---------------[DR site]

and specs
VM-01 (Gateway server)
CPU 2 vCPU
RAM 8 GB
HDD 100 GB
NET 10Gbps
SQL --

VM-02 (VAS)
CPU 8-10 vCPU
RAM 30 GB
HDD 600 GB
NET 10 Gbps
SQL Express

Could you give me some advice about model and specs for this? sorry I'm not good as English.

Hi Tommy, could you please describe your setup in a bit more detail, since it is not 100% clear from your description? What do you have in what location (local/remote)? Where VMs you are going to backup reside and how many of them do you have? Also, seems you're going top use a dedupe device as your primary repository, which is not generally recommended.

Hi Foggy,
I have to prepare 2 VM for Veeam backup:
VM-01: I will install VAS 9.5 (enterprise plus)
VM-02: Gateway server (due to in our environment we use Data domain dedupe)

As primary and DR site we build same model.

And My question is how many RAM; CPU; HDD for 10 VM guest which 5TB?
Second one: should I install VAS (all in one) into VM-01 and Gateway server to VM-02 or like this:

VM-01 component:
  • - Backup server
    - Veeam ONE (all in one)
    - Veeam enterprise manager

VM-02 component:
  • - Gateway server
    - Proxy server

You can find system requirements in the corresponding user guide section (requirements for the backup repository apply to gateway server in this case).

Hi Foggy,

Is there any issue if we combine Proxy server and Gateway server role at the same server (VM or Physical)?

Just keep in mind the combined system requirements for such server.
