Hy!
I have a standalone file server which is on Veeam B&R. The file server is a vm on ESXi. Can I backup the file server where installed Veeam B&R? So can Veeam B&R backup itself? Are there any limitation? Does it have any specific settings?
I read that it is possible, isn't it?
Thanks.

Re: Can Veeam B&R backup itself?
Hi Adam
First, let me say that running a file server on a backup server is a bad idea. An attacker who can take over your file server from a client (I assume that client and file server are in the same domain) will delete all your files and all your backups. I suggest that you create a second backup copy on an offline or immutable backup storage.
On the backup question. Yes, you can do a VM backup of your backup server. What type of backup destination are you using? Is the backup storage also directly on the backup server or is it a NAS device outside the VM?
Additionally to the VM backup, you can create a configuration backup of your Veeam server:

Thanks
Fabian

Re: Can Veeam B&R backup itself?
Hi Mildur!
Thanks for your fast response.
Yes, I know it isn't the best solution, but it is only a test environment.
The backup destination is a NAS.

Re: Can Veeam B&R backup itself?
Ok, if the repo is on your NAS, then creating a backup of the VM just works as for any other vm.
If the NAS storage is added to the VM in vSphere as a VM disk, you need to exclude it from the VM backup.
Thanks
Fabian
